Great Expectations begins with the introduction of young Pip who is an orphaned child placed in the care of his harsh and brutal sister, and her sensitive husband Joe. Pip develops overtime to be a very determined character. He is ashamed of living in poverty, and finds everyone around him to be uneducated. This gives him his strive to become part of the upper class. He gets this view on the lower class from spending time with Miss. Havisham, a love deprived woman, and her adopted child, Estella, who talks down to Pip. Even then, Pip falls in love with her and the desire to be a gentleman. His opportunity arises when Jaggers, invites him to be his guardian in London and Pip can inherit a fortune left for him by an anonymous figure. In London Pip fulfills his desires to be educated and befriends Herbert, and together they open up a business. However things become more complicated when Pip runs into many people that connect back to Miss. Havisham. Eventually Pip realizes that Miss. Havisham, the nasty and unloved woman, has been raising Estella to break his heart. Along his journey to becoming a gentleman, he has to overcome many tragic incidents and his great expectations are often shattered.
