Book Review

Great Expectations is a rather interesting book, however, I do not know if this is the ideal read for most people. This book is written in old English which makes it harder to understand, but it is still written very well. Charles Dickens writes in a way which clearly paints a picture, and spends a large portion of time describing the scenery, and the events that take place along Pip’s journey. Another good thing about the book, is that many people can potentially relate to Pip. He has great expectations for himself, and will do anything to get to where he wants to be. Fortunately, Pip had a bit of luck, but not everything goes right in his journey and he overcomes many struggles. This is what makes Pip relatable, his desire to achieve something that people have little faith that he can do. You see Pip’s desire because he is from a lower class and is ashamed of his lack of education and formality.
While there are many good things about this book there are bad things. Not only is the old English a problem, but it takes a while to get to the main events of the book and the beginning is very slow.  Also, Great Expectations isn’t exactly what you would call a “quick read”, it’s very time consuming. As a result, I would recommend that you should read this book if you want to. If you have no current desire, or minimal desire to read it, it’s almost impossible to really get into the story. Personally, I think that if I read it for my own pleasure, I would have enjoyed it more. Overall, this is a good read, but the reader should WANT to read it.
